Hoping to take some of the financial sting associated with active 3D TVs—namely, the high cost of active-shutter 3D glasses—out of the equation for potential customers, starting later this month Samsung will bundle two pairs of 3D active glasses with every LCD or plasma 3D TV it sells.
The company is also slashing the cost of its least expensive active 3D glasses (model SSG-3100GB, shown above, which uses a replaceable battery) to under $ 50 starting May 1st, down from $ 130. Samsung says it will be repricing its entire line of 3D glasses shortly.
The new Samsung promotion starts on April 24 and affects all 3D TVs except for those step-up models (D7000-series and above 3D LCD TVs and D6500-series and above 3D plasma TVs) that are eligible for a free 3D starter kit SSG-3100M, which bundles two sets of glasses with DreamWorks’ complete 3D Blu-ray Shrek collection and a voucher to get the Megamind 3D Blu-ray.
These moves come as more so-called “passive” 3D TVs, from companies including LG, Toshiba, and Vizio, hit the market. One big appeal of these sets is that they use lightweight, inexpensive polarized glasses; also, most TVs come with four pairs. Additional passive glasses generally cost from $ 10 to $ 45. By addressing the cost of active 3D glasses, Samsung hopes the conversation will shift to 3D performance, where the active 3D technology has some advantages, most notably the ability to present full 1080p resolution to each eye.
