This review is from: Belkin 6-piece Mini Screwdriver Set with Belt Clip

This belt clip screwdriver set is wonderful for what it is: a great way to carry a set of 6 screwdriver bits and an extension on your belt, that is also a cheap plastic screwdriver handle. The bit holder is really what it was designed for and it excels at that. The bits are the same 1/4″ hex bits that are used in just about every screwdriver and drill accessory that has replaceable screwdriver tips, so if you want to replace the bits with Torx or hex bits, it will hold those as well. When working on a big carpentry job like installing a deck where you wear out bits, you can load 6 spares in the case and have them handy when you need new ones.

As a screwdriver, it only works when everything is going well. The extension tip is secured in a hex-shaped hole in the case, and as pictured, you can reverse it and use it as a small screwdriver. The case then becomes the screwdriver handle, but unfortunately it is only plastic and if you twist hard, say to remove a stuck screw, the hex hole becomes a round one. I have several of these (they are very handy!) and I modified one by cutting a slot in it with a Dremel tool and inserting a 3/16″ thick steel spanner. It came from some DIY kit and had the right size hex hole in it. I ground the sides of the spanner to fit the shape of the case so the cover could close and that solved the problem of the steel hex shaft spinning in the plastic holder.

Far from my toolbox one day, I used it as a screwdriver and discovered why screwdriver handles are round! While it is okay for one or two screws, this is an awkward thing to turn around and around if you need to turn a lot of screws. I guess my next project will be to modify one using a 1/4″ ratchet, but I wish someone would make exactly this kit but with a ratcheting bit holder instead of the plastic hole.

As the previous reviewer said, the hinge is only plastic and will eventually break, but I use these every day and the hinges last for years. Pretty good for a $5 tool!

By the way, these are made by a Chinese company that sells them to other companies either as promotional items with whatever logo they want, so you can sometimes find them for free at trade shows, or discounted near tool or hardware store cash registers with the store name on it as a reminder to come back and shop there.

This review is from: Belkin 6-piece Mini Screwdriver Set with Belt Clip

I’ve used this for decades and it has come in handy many times. It fits easily in a pocket and is plastic so you don’t have to worry about bulk or scratching other things up with it. It can also clip on your belt, but there are differently branded ones without the belt clip. It has the most common sizes for flat head and Phillips head screws. The adapter goes into a hex opening inside the case for storage, or through the same opening on the outside of the case to work as a handle. The case is big enough to provide the torque you need for typical jobs, but it will be too wide to fit into some places that a regular handle would allow. In such cases, it’s slightly akin to using a wrench in a tight space. But in most cases, it will give you the torque that a key chain sized set won’t.

The other downside aside from the “case as handle” issue is that the case is molded plastic including its “hinge.” You’ve probably had tool cases and other things with something that pivots on molded plastic rather than a real hinge, and you might have found yourself wondering how long you can use it before it’s been flexed back and forth long enough to fall apart. The short answer is that I’m on my second one, and I’d guess that the first lasted 18 years.

For pragmatic reasons, I can’t fault it for the first problem, and the second is appropriate for an item in its price range, so I’d consider it the best overall choice for a convenient “pocket sized” set. You can’t clip it to your key chain, but you can take it with you.
