I’ll never forget the first time I received my first VHS tape. It was a present from Good Ol’ Saint Nick. A shiny new copy of “Where the Red Fern Grows”, I couldn’t wait to get that baby open and into my parents’ VHS deck. And, of course, it was torture waiting for a more decent hour to finally arrive so that I could take my cassette to my best friend’s house for hours of movie watching magic.
Fast forward twenty-five years. VHS tapes have been since been replaced by DVDs, Blu Ray discs and now, drumroll please, digitized media files. Now, I don’t know about you, and maybe it’s a sign that I really am getting old, but I like having my movie collection proudly displayed in my living room for the entire world to see. I like being able to close my eyes, run my fingers along the smooth plastic spines of my DVD and Blu Ray collection and select a movie at will. Not to mention, how much fun could it possibly be to unwrap a gift card to iTunes or Netflix found under the tree this year?
Ok, ok. So maybe it IS fun to get the gift of digital media. I mean, it sure is a lot easier to download your favorite flick to one of any number of electronic gadgetry in perfect HD quality without the hassle of having to convert codecs. And, having a library of ready to watch titles stored neatly away in the cloud is a whole lot more cost effective (and space saving) than buying the physical discs.
Maybe it’s time for me to just get on the bandwagon. What about you? Have you stopped buying physical media in favor of subscription movie (and music) sites? What are you doing with your old discs? Maybe selling them to Time Life? Hanging them on the wall as a reminder of what used to be? Let me know in the comments section below.
