Our advocates weigh in on the AT&T/T-Mobile merger

To our advocacy colleagues at Consumers Union, there’s nothing funny about the proposed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile. But an ad they’re running in today’s Politico (adapted above) uses humor to convey CU’s opposition to AT&T’s plan to swallow up its smaller wireless competitor.

In addition to today’s ad, our colleagues have sent a letter to every member of Congress: It summarizes the findings of a Consumer Reports National Research Center survey that reveals low satisfaction with AT&T service, and of a Consumer Reports price analysis that shows the carrier’s rates to be generally higher than T-Mobile’s. (That point was further reinforced yesterday when T-Mobile announced a new, low-priced unlimited plan.)

“We are concerned that T-Mobile’s departure from the wireless market would eliminate a relatively low-cost carrier as an option that many consumers need access to in order to afford quality wireless service,” said Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for Consumers Union.

To sign a petition opposing the merger, or to get more information on CU’s position, go to hearusnow.org, CU’s telecom website.
